Do I Need Insurance for Storage Container Contents? A Plain-English Guide
One of the first questions people ask when they book a container with us is: “Is my stuff insured while it’s in storage?” It’s a fair question — and the honest answer is one every storage customer in Manchester should hear before they lock the doors.
The short answer: you arrange your own cover
Storage companies provide the secure space — the steel container, the lock, the monitored compound. What’s inside is your property, and insuring it is your responsibility. That’s standard across the self storage industry, and it’s written into our terms like everyone else’s.
So if your goods matter to you (and they wouldn’t be in storage if they didn’t), it’s worth spending ten minutes thinking about insurance before you move a single box in.
What could actually go wrong?
Let’s be realistic. Our compound in Salford has 24/7 CCTV monitoring, heavy-duty steel containers with protective lockboxes, and we only hand a key to you. Theft from inside a locked container on a monitored site is rare — that’s the whole point of choosing container storage over a wooden shed or a garage nobody watches.
But “rare” isn’t “impossible,” and theft isn’t the only risk:
- Fire — extremely unlikely in a steel container, but nearby incidents can affect a whole site.
- Water ingress — our containers are wind and watertight and ventilated, yet severe flooding is something no outdoor site can promise away.
- Accidental damage during loading — the most common cause of loss we ever see isn’t the container at all; it’s a sofa leg snapping on the way in, or a box marked “fragile” landing at the bottom of the stack.
- Mould and moisture over long stays — a risk in any storage, which is why we wrote a whole guide on condensation in storage containers at /storage-container-condensation-guide/.
Insurance exists for the unlikely-but-costly events. The likelier everyday risks are handled by packing properly — see our 12 space-saving packing tips at /how-to-pack-a-storage-container/ for that side of things.
Will my home contents insurance cover items in storage?
Sometimes — but don’t assume it does. Many UK home contents policies include a clause for “contents temporarily removed from the home,” which can cover belongings in storage. The catch is usually in the limits:
- The payout cap for stored goods is often much lower than your main home limit.
- Cover may only last 30 to 60 days.
- Some insurers require you to tell them the goods are in a self storage unit — and to know the facility’s security arrangements.
Before you store anything of real value, ring your insurer and ask three questions: Is my cover extended to a self storage container? For how long? And what’s the maximum claim? Get the answers in writing. If the answers are vague, that’s your signal to look further.
One more thing worth knowing: some policies only pay out if the storage site meets certain security standards — typically a locked steel unit on a site with controlled entry. That’s one reason container storage with CCTV monitoring suits insurers: it ticks their boxes more easily than a shared garage or an unmanned lock-up ever could. Specialist storage insurance: what to look for
If your home policy falls short, dedicated storage insurance policies exist and are usually affordable — often a few pounds a week depending on the total value of your goods. When comparing them, check:
- New-for-old vs indemnity — new-for-old replaces items at today’s prices; indemnity pays what they were worth second-hand. The difference matters for electronics and furniture.
- Single-item limits — many policies cap individual items at £1,000–£2,000 unless you declare them. Expensive bikes, instruments and heirlooms need listing.
- Exclusions — cash, jewellery, documents and perishables are commonly excluded. Motor vehicles usually need their own cover.
- The security requirements — insurers may require a minimum standard of lock or site security. Keep our address (21 Cheltenham Street, Salford M6 6WY) and our security details handy when you apply.
Whatever you choose, photograph your items and keep a simple inventory list as you load. If you ever need to claim, that list is the difference between a smooth process and a painful one.
Five quick steps before you store
- Check your home contents policy — ask about goods in storage, time limits and caps.
- Value your load honestly — add up replacement cost, not what you paid years ago.
- Top up or buy specialist cover if there’s a gap.
- Photograph and list everything as it goes into the container.
- Pack for the risks you can control — sturdy boxes, weight at the bottom, nothing fragile on top.
The bottom line
A secure container with 24/7 CCTV monitoring and a lock only you hold the key to handles the security side well. Insurance handles the financial “what if.” The two work together: good security keeps the chance of a claim tiny, and good insurance means a tiny chance never becomes a big problem.
